When we arrived the second time, there was already a group of people waiting outside so highly recommend reservations to be sure you get a table. into a table since we were there as soon as they opened. The first time we had a reservation, and the second time we got very lucky and were able to sneak. My husband and I have been to Hop Alley twice in the last year, once just the two of us and again with another couple. My mouth has not stopped thanking me since going to Hop Alley and I am sure your mouth will do the same to you. And it cried with beautiful ecstasy after every bite of the never before tasted Shanghai Rice Cakes. My mouth shook with excitement every time it bit into the crunchy, spicy, tangy, yet subtly smooth soft-shell crab. My mouth cried with excitement as a full-bodied spicy tsunami of flavor danced across my taste-buds with every bite of the steamed eggplant. New flavors, new dishes, new sensations it had never experienced outside of fine dining in South East Asia. Then on a fine Tuesday Evening, this mouth and its squad of taste-buds went to RiNo and ventured into a restaurant called hop alley, where alas it finally found what it was searching for. This mouth and crew of tastebuds traveled all the different neighborhoods (Cap hill, Wash Park, LoHi, SloHi, Highlands West, Potter Highlands and more) of Denver to find these flavors, but alas the mouth and taste-buds were only created with new restaurant concepts that had & in the name and some sort of take on pork belly. a story about a mouth full of taste buds clamoring for something different. It really is a wonderful and welcome addition to Denver's growing food scene and now one of our "go to" standards with my family. Also, the restaurant does not offer dessert if you need something sweet post dinner. Restaurant does not take reservations but they seem to move folks along pretty quickly. Love that he has passion and interest in the elements of Chinese food. We met Todd, the chef, and he is awesome. And Shanghai rice cakes-love they were in a dark ragu-like sauce versus the white pork sauce version found in other places. The eggplant, done Szechuan style, was not awash in a thick goopy sauce, surrounded instead with a light chili oil and fresh bean sprouts. The duck wrapped in scallion pancake was my favorite with the soft-shell crab a close second. Family style, tapas sized Chinese food delivered with fresh ingredients and a new take on Chinese/Asian food. I also love to cook so this restaurant is a great combination of an authentic take on Chinese food but delivered in a fresh and new way. We have had terrific experiences here! I am of Chinese descent and love the traditional styles of Chinese food.
